Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – James Acaster: Page 2 of 2

james Acaster

What do your parents/children (delete as applicable) think of your job?

Proud like a lion.

What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?

Getting exposed to at least one horrendous human being on a weekly basis

I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?

Oh It's my cup of tea but I'm always surprised when it's anyone else's

How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?

Depends on the job. I have no goals in terms of income. I should change that attitude probably.

How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?

I'm not sure. Every comedian I know has worked really hard and as a result they get better as comics and then they get booked more and then there's a higher chance someone will see them at a gig and book them for something like a TV show or whatever.  But it's still lucky they were in the room to see us and then liked us.

I definitely feel lucky to have an agent who gets my stuff and an audience who come and see it. And I feel lucky that Josie (Long) and Milton (Jones) let me be their tour support because I learnt a lot from both tours.

Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into a third category?

I think most comics get on with it when it's going well and torture themselves when it's going badly.  I do anyway.

Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?

Yoko Ono. She is so tough and I wish I was tough like her too.

Editor's note: James Acaster did not answer the final question - do you keep your drawers tidy? – which is a shame, because I think he might be the only comedian who does.
