Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Mitch Benn

mitch Benn

Mitch Benn is a busy man. Very busy. When not on the radio doing his own shows or topical songs on The Now Show, the Liverpool-born comedian is often on tour. When he's not on the radio or on tour he is writing books. He has not one but two successful novels under his belt, Terra and Terra's World. And when he is not doing any of this things he is quite possibly watching Dr Who. In his latest show, Don't Believe A Word, he explores the nature of belief: "I'm a skeptic. But don't take my word for it. Or indeed anybody's. For anything...." Mitch Benn is currently on tour at is at the Bloomsbury Theatre Studio on October 23 and 24. You can take my word for that. More details about live shows and everything else going on in Mitchworld is here.

1. What is the last thing you do before you go onstage (apart from check your flies, check for spinach between teeth and check your knickers aren't sticking out of your skirt)?

I try not to develop any backstage rituals because if you're not careful they become Dumbo's magic feather; you panic if for some reason you have to go without them.

One thing I will do when I'm touring is try to get a decent vocal warm up in (usually involves locking myself in a cupboard and making fire engine noises for a few minutes). Don't really have the opportunity to do that at club gigs though.

2. What irritates you?

"You a comedian then? Tell us a joke!"

3. What is the most dangerous thing you have ever done?

Driving home through the night in a proper Arctic blizzard in a very small car with no functioning windscreen demister.

4. What is the most stupid thing you have ever done?

See above.

5. What has surprised you the most during your career in comedy?

The fact that I survived driving home through the night in a proper Arctic blizzard in a very small car with no functioning windscreen demister.

6. What do your parents/children (delete as applicable) think of your job?

Both extremely proud. Says way more good things about them than it does about me.
