Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Terry Alderton: Page 2 of 2

Terry Alderton

6. What do your parents/children (delete as applicable) think of your job?

My parents are used to it; and as long as I'm happy they’re happy. My son has known no different and has even be on stage with me several times.

7. What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?

Depression, insecurity, loneliness, self-loathing and being misunderstood.

8. I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?

Thank you. To be frank I love what I do because I'm original; not always the funniest, but for me that doesn't matter. I think what I try and do is create a journey that sometimes just won’t work. Although that in itself kinda works?! I just hope the audience sees this, that’s all I can hope for. Fact is my whole performance is a reflection of my mind, both vocally and physically.

9. How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?

Enough and it’s enough

10. How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks

To quote a cliché you create your own luck. To say you were lucky because ‘they were in that night’ is neither here nor there. It's usually because you put yourself out there so many times (throw enough mud at the wall) that the chances are your paths will meet (something will stick?). What I mean by this is that doing maybe 10 Edinburgh shows and other festivals so you continue to build. To quote another cliché: luck is when preparation meets opportunity - there's no truer word. And then of course there is serendipity… is that a contradiction?

11. Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into a third category?

Well there are many ways to look at this… what’s the difference between a comedian and a comic? A comic opens funny doors and comedians open doors in a funny way. In the past I would torture myself but nowadays I really couldn't give a shit. Needless to say life is pretty good.

12. Who is your favourite person ever and why - not including family or friends or other comedians?

IMPOSSIBLE QUESTION TO ANSWER SORRY

13. Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not?

Do I Fuck. Why? I don’t have time for drawers..
