Latitude Review: Marcus Brigstocke

Marcus Brigstocke

Marcus Brigstocke is probably the perfect Latitude comedian. completely in tune with the middle class audience’s dreams, aspirations and frustrations. It was no surprise to hear him say at the start of his set that he has been to every Latitude Festival. If Latitude had a face it would look like Brigstocke.

So while he was always going to have a good gig the seasoned performer never cruised. I suspect that a lot of this material will pop up in his forthcoming Edinburgh show so I won't go into too much detail, but it was nice to see that his material about Greece and Germany gave him a chance to dust off his old beatboxing skills. The talented 42 year-old is not the greatest mimic in the world – his Indian accent is not racist but it is distinctly Welsh – but his ability to create a techno beat with his gob and a mic is formidable.

Elsewhere he got more personal, touching on his split with his wife suggesting that people should maybe tough it out when the going gets bad like people did in the old days. This segued neatly into some resonant anecdotes about being back on the dating scene after nearly two decades. This was clearly a rich vein of material which almost wrote itself. At times it felt as if he was just talking about what he had been up to recently. In a very funny way of course.

Like Sara Pascoe before him, Brigstocke’s set also included a passionate plea to save the NHS. Though his reason for singing their praises was because they warmed up the usually freezing cold gel that they put on his testicles before examining them

In fact there was quite a bit of crossover with Pascoe. Though Brigstocke was probably better when it came to summing up the utter poshness of Latitude. He was standing near a stall selling carved wooden owls when he overheard someone say “Shall we get that for the other house”. I hope he won't mind me quoting that. It’s not a line he can use in Edinburgh.
