Alex Horne Talks About The Future Of Taskmaster

Taskmaster creator Alex Horne has talked candidly about the future of Taskmaster to former contestant Richard Herring. Horne was a guest on Herring's Book Club podcast and was there to promote his new children's fiction book, The Last Pebble, but inevitably the conversation eventually turned to his monster TV success which has been adapted all around the world.

Herring, who won Champion of Champions, was upset that Horne doesn't plan to reunite all the Champions on Champions in an ultimate Champion of Champions of Champions contest.

"You say something and then it becomes gospel. So we're not at that stage yet. We've still got one more champion champions to go before we even consider that.  I do I have a slight hunch that you should leave people wanting more. And you shouldn't always give people what they want. But I also think more people would prefer to watch a loser of losers."

"They definitely would," agreed Herring. "Because I that's what I get asked most. But I also have a problem with rewarding failure."

I think but I also think both shows wouldn't be as good, said Herring. "I think like everyone doing badly won't be will be just annoying."

And Herring also made the point that the line-up would not be very diverse. Previous sinners so far are Herring, Josh Widdicombe, Dara Ó Briain and Mathew Baynton.

Horne agreed: "I guess that's probably is a slight factor. It's frustrating, I think, because we're pretty pleased with our numbers of representation and then you see the four champion of champions are all white men."

Horne was also keen on the thrill of not having people returning: "I do prefer having fresh people each time. I would love an international one, I loved Going for Gold, but I think commissioners aren't that interested in that – they don't want to see a Swedish person particularly."

Herring asked: "Do you think Greg's the best Taskmaster?" If there was an international one Horne thinks Davies should front it but maybe not with him: "Assistants are more interchangeable." He rates New Zealnd's Paul Williams as being both good looking and talented. "He's funnier than me."

"Yeah. Although the Swedish lady is really good and it helps them that they've got a woman in charge because, you know, it's not a great look for us. The older we get, these two old blokes telling everyone what to do and judging them..."

"I do think we are doing a good job at promoting comedians who haven't got a big following as they should have," Horne added in his defence.

"It did nothing for me," joked Herring, "but I think like for Stevie Martin it's been fantastic and it kind of broke Fatiha El Gorri." "There are certain people it really does display their skills like Mike Wozniak and John Kearns," said Horne.

As for the future Horne teased Herring with a possible non-Taskmaster project: "I have got a plan. I might do a stupid podcast which would take loads of my time and not be popular. But I can't tell you about it, so there's no point bringing that up..."
