Leicester Comedy Festival Performers Still Unpaid

The BBC has reported that comedians who performed at this year's Leicester Comedy Festival in February have still not been paid.

According to their story the delay is due to cashflow problems that the organisers of the oldest comedy festival in the UK, dating from 1994, are trying to resolve.

Comedian Ben Alborough, who plays Terry Wogan onstage (pictured) is one of many who had a long wait for payment. He said: "It's very frustrating. I've got bills to pay like everyone else."

Alborough has finally been paid: "Thanks to the partners we've worked with - specifically Colin Bowles of TrippleCeePee, we've now received what we're owed while the wait goes on for others."

Performers expected to be paid in April but instead received an email informing them that there was a delay.

Beyond The Joke spoke to a promoter who didn't want to be named. They said: "They owe us over £4,000 which should have arrived over a month ago."

Organisers of events are also waiting for payment so that they can pay their staff.

Michael Harris-Wakelam, CEO of Big Difference, which runs the Festival, told the BBC: "What we're trying to communicate with [the artists] is this is a case of a small delay rather than 'you won't be paid'. We're still waiting for money that's owed to us for our activities during the festival. We're prioritising those artists right now - to the detriment of some of our other planned activities."
