MICHAEL MCINTYRE Q&A
It’s incredible that The Wheel is already on its sixth series. What does reaching this
milestone mean to you?
I can’t believe The Wheel has spun for six series already! When it launched in lockdown with social distancing, I had no idea it would evolve (and revolve) into such a staple of TV entertainment. It’s fast become my happy place and I can’t see myself not making more and more series as it’s genuinely so much fun to play - I think that is always the secret of good entertainment - if we’re having fun it’ll be fun to watch.
The Wheel is known for having some wacky categories on it. Were there any that really stood out to you this series?
There are some wonderful categories on The Wheel this series including; Australian Men, Crisps, Shrek, Power Ballads, Phobias, Hot Drinks…but my favourite would have to be Joey Essex on Dentistry!
Can viewers look forward to some exciting new faces on The Wheel this series?
There’s always a great mix of returners and new faces spinning around the Wheel. Inside Number 9 legends Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith share a double chair with
‘Horror’ as their category. There are also some brilliant debuts from the likes of Kelly Cates, Francis Bourgeois on ‘Trains’, Alex Horne, Adam Hills and Tommy Fury!
Were there any particularly memorable or laugh-out-loud moments during filming this series?
Yes! There’s a moment at the end of one of the shows, just as we’re about to discover whether a contestant has won, that had the entire Wheel in hysterics. Chris McCausland and Tony Bellew might still be laughing about it now. Definitely not one to miss.
Did any of the celebrity experts surprise you with their knowledge…or lack thereof?
Tony Blackburn put in a hilariously poor performance. Ricky Wilson, on the other hand, was a sensation.
There will be a Christmas special. Without revealing who the celeb contestants are, can you tell us a little bit about what it was like to film the special and why you decided to bring it back this year?
We had a year off making a Christmas Show last year. I actually had a year off Christmas myself as I went on holiday. But Christmas is back with a bang! Incredible celebs, categories and celebrity contestants. I will tease you with the words, “Big Narstie on Reindeer” and “Gavin and Stacey on “Gavin and Stacey”. It’s a riotous festive treat.
