He's Cracked It! Cooking Comedian's Book Is A Best Seller
Comedian and chef George Egg's new book, mixing autobiography with food tips, has quickly become a best seller.
The Snack Hacker - Rule-breaking Recipes for Cooks and Non-cooks has over 90 recipes in it, which are punctuated by stories of growing up, working at Circus Archaos as a crepe chef, living in a housing cooperative, performing at the Edinburgh Fringe and lots more.
It was published on June 5th. Within a week of publication it was on the Sunday Times Bestseller list. Which, says Egg, is "quite an achievement for a cookbook too I’m told as recipe books go in the ‘manuals’ category along with, absurdly, puzzle books. My publishers tell me that in that first week (in fact it’s a part-week as it was published on a Thursday) it was the 8th most purchased hardback book in the country across all categories."
Egg's book is laid (or should that be layed?) out like a show, with two acts and an interval and a story arc throughout, mostly about Egg's late father. There’s also an audio edition with lots of extra bits aside of the studio-recorded readings from the book, recorded by the author in the park, in his kitchen and elsewhere.
It’s a co-created project with Egg's son Jem Ward, who has illustrated all of his show posters over the years.
