An opening date for Tim Minchin’s musical version of the movie Groundhog Day has been revealed. It will open on Broadway on March 9, 2017, with previews from January 23.

According to reports Minchin will be working on it with some of the same people that worked on his previous stage work, the award-winning Matilda – choreographer Peter Darling, designer Rob Howell and the director Matthew Warchus. According to @westendproducer on Twitter, before Broadway there may be shows in London at the Old Vic where Warchus is due to take over as Artistic Director from Kevin Spacey.

The book is by Danny Rubin, who wrote the film with its late director Harold Ramis. Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell were the stars of the 1993 film about a cynical weatherman who finds love when he relives the same day over and over again. Casting for the stage version has not been announced yet.

Minchin first revealed that he was working on this project over a year ago. He played one of the songs from the proposed production,  a sentimental love song called Seeing You, at a gig in Hyde Park last summer, reviewed here.
