Rarely Asked Questions – Connor Burns

What do your parents think of your job?

They love it. We are a very typical working class family so of course there were some reservations about financial stability at the start... But as soon as you get to take them to New York to watch you perform it suddenly becomes the coolest job ever.

What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?

Where I am in my career I still very much have to be budget conscious, so there's a lot of dodgy motorway hotels. That can get tedious very fast.

I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?

I used to have real trouble answering a question like that but ultimately you do have to back yourself in this line of work and I've learned that I am pretty damn good at this... at the very least I think in almost any room I can dig my heels in and get the job done.

How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?

Right now I get to cover all of my bills from comedy alone... and That's crazy, I feel stupidly lucky to say that, however I'm human and a few extra holidays wouldn't hurt... so buy tour tickets please.

How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?

It's massive but I do believe that you make your own luck... if you work hard and keep putting yourself out there you create situations where you can get a bit lucky and catch a wave for a while. I hate the saying "What's for you won't go past you" It absolutely will... especially if you sit on your backside waiting for it to happen.

Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into third category?

Any time I let myself slide into the headspace of the woe is me "tortured artist" I remind myself that I'm a tiny speck of dust in a universe that will explode one day no matter what we do... life's short, just smile and get on with it... so I guess I'm a golfer.

Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?

This is tough... all of my favourite people are either family, friends or other comedians... but I guess I'd say my old boss from when I used to fix washing machines... If he hadn't been such a miserable, insufferable grump I maybe would've never left to pursue stand up. So thanks for that.

Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (please think long and hard about this question, it's to settle an argument with my girlfriend. The future of our relationship could depend on your response).

Yes absolutely! however there is one drawer in my flat... kind of a junk drawer but my partner and I have done everything to tame it...Organisers, dividers, storage containers etc but no matter what within a week chaos reigns supreme and the drawer is a mess again.
