Patrick Kielty To Be New Host Of The Late Late Show

Patrick Kielty is to be the new host or legendary Irish flagship chat show The Late Late Show, most famously hosted by Gay Byrne.

Broadcaster RTE posted the news on Twitter: "“I’m absolutely thrilled to be the next host of The Late Late Show.  To follow in the footsteps of Gay, Pat and Ryan as the next custodian is a real honour and I can’t thank RTÉ enough for giving me the chance to be a part of the next chapter of such an iconic show.  I’m also genuinely humbled to become part of Friday nights for so many Irish people, at home and around the world. I can’t wait to get started on one of the greatest jobs in television."

And afterwards Kielty added his own comment: "Posting this before they change their mind! A real honour to follow in the footsteps of Gay, Pat and Ryan. Thanks RTE for the chance to be a part of the next chapter. @RTELateLateShow"

Ryan Tubridy, the current host, has done the job for 14 years and presents his last show at the end of May.

Born in Dundrum, Co. Down, Kielty began his stand-up career as host of Belfast’s first comedy club The Empire Laughs Back in 1992. An award winning stand up and broadcaster, his entertainment credits include PK Tonight, Patrick Kielty Almost Live and Live at the Apollo for the BBC.

A former Grierson UK documentary host of the year, his BAFTA nominated My Dad, The Peace Deal and Me won many plaudits, whilst his film, Patrick Kielty: 100 Years of Union premiered on BBC One to both audience and critical acclaim.

His father Jack Kielty was murdered by loyalist paramilitaries. He is married to presenter Cat Deeley.

Last year he was announced as the new host of BBC Radio 5 Live’s 9-11am Saturday morning show. He also returned to stand-up in 2022, touring for the first time in five years with his show Borderline (pictured).
