John Bishop Show Guests This Week

John Bishop Show Guests This Week

This week's guests on The John Bishop Show are Roisin Conaty, Craig David and Richard E Grant. This is an odd show that doesn't seem to get a big PR push, but that's a decent line-up.

Many of the comments about the show in recent weeks have been about the political content of Bishop's monologues. His anti-government material seems to annoy as many people as it delights, possibly more. As a comedy critic he has my sympathues. It's a hard to deliver a cutting edge topical routine about Rishi Sunak when all the best gags have been delivered on social media already.

In fact last week's show was interesting because Bishop's monologue about getting a rescue dog was much funnier than his riff about Rishi. Maybe it just felt more like the personal material he tells onstage, just shooting the breeze about something that has happened to him and being naturally funny. That's what has made John Bishop a superstar, not trying to be the next Lenny Bruce/Ben Elton.

Anyway, let's hope he gets some good chat out of his guests. Richard E Grant is always value for money and has recently published his autobiography. The Withnail and I star is also due to host the Bafta Film Awards later this month. Watch him being a great sport in a previous show here. The ever youthful Craig David has also recently published a book so he should have a few tales to tell.

I don't know if Roisin Conaty is plugging anything in particular. She hasn't been gigging much recently and her E4/C4 comedy Game Face ended a few years ago, though it would be lovely if she was about to reveal that it's coming back. Or maybe she has another project to announce. Anyway, it would be lovely to have more of Conaty. And maybe less of Bishop trying to be satirical.
