John Inverdale Sends Social Media Into A Frenzy

I particularly needed a laugh today and I thought I'd get it from comedians. In fact I ended up getting it from the public on social media who seem to be united in being irritated by tennis commentator John Inverdale, who was commentating with Tim Heman on the Wimbledon match between Nadal and Cerundolo. Twitter went into a frenzy during the action.

Big Jules TV set the tone: "Ah crap. My yearly reminder that John Inverdale still exists."

Steve Till tweeted: "When John Inverdale said Rafa was: “coming round Tottenham Corner” (mixing his sports in a way only he can), I immediately thought of the number of horses I have seen stumble and lose their balance rounding that part of the Epsom course."

Rainbow Isle added: "A few years ago I thought we were rid of John Inverdale for tennis coverage. How did he manage to get crawl back."

Peri Urban noted: "John Inverdale is constantly surprised by the twists and turns of tennis. Almost as if he never watched a match before!"

Mark Trenam continued: "His inane prattle and lack of any real tennis knowledge detracts so much from what should a good match to watch."

Adam J Carpenter: "I wish John Inverdale would stop calling Cerundolo "the Argentinian". He hasn't once called Nadal, "the Spaniard". Can't believe this dinosaur is even a commentator."

Now You're Talking tweeted: "Why is John Inverdale a commentator at Wimbledon? He seems to know very little about tennis or the players. And his speculation about mindset is naive and annoying"Dr RosClarje speculated: "am absolutely certain that Rafael Nadal is never, ever thinking the things John Inverdale suggests he is."

AMH summed up many viewers' exasperation: "Please for the sake of tennis fans everywhere, retire the moron from commentating!!"

Game, set and match to Twitter (and Nadal), but not John Inverdale.
