Comedian and podcaster Adam Buxton has been trending on Twitter after Storm Eunice caused the Spire of St Thomas's Church in Wells, Somerset to come crashing to the ground. For many Buxton fans this echoed the scene in the movie Hot Fuzz in which his reporter character Tim Messenger is killed by a falling spire. Hot Fuzz was filmed in Wells.

The director of Hot Fuzz, Edgar Wright, tweeted: "I would like to point out that the spire in ‘Hot Fuzz’ was St Cuthbert’s Church in Wells Somerset and not the nearby St Thomas’s Church. That’s not to say it was all Storm Eunice and not the work of the NWA however…"

Fans were quick to point out the similarity. Gareth Bird tweeted: "Warmed the cockles (& other body parts) to see Adam Buxton trending. It’s due to the spire tumbling to the ground at St. Thomas's Church in Somerset. A reference to ‘Hot Fuzz’. Shame “Dr. Buckles” doesn’t frequent this platform anymore."

QLS tweeted: "Adam Buxton is the number one trend in the uk because the church spire fell off in Wells, Somerset and this is why i love twitter dot com"

In Deep Geek was one of many who tweeted: "Can someone please check if Adam Buxton is OK .... #HotFuzz"

Clay had a similar thought: "Can someone please check on intrepid local news reporter Tim Messenger?"

For other film buffs the sight of the spire falling dramatically to the ground reminded them of Patrick Troughton being impaled in The Omen.

Graeme Swanson wrote: "Show your age by referencing Patrick Troughton or Adam Buxton."

Ed Sinclair tried to settle the matter: "Look. The church spire is objectively more Adam Buxton than Patrick Troughton. It's a conical piece of masonry, and it's literally in Wells. Why am I even having to explain this ffs you people"

Adam Buxton is no longer on Twitter but Keith J thoughtfully cc'd Edgar Wright: "Cc @edgarwright Our hopes & prayers are with Adam Buxton"
