Janey Godley Discusses Latest Cancer Update

Scottish comedian Janey Godley has talked about the diagnosis of Stage 3 ovarian cancer following her recent hysterectomy. Godley will now have to undergo chemotherapy.

Godley said on Instagram: “It’s been nine days since my hysterectomy. I thought that would be the end of everything. But it’s not, it’s the beginning. I have got stage three ovarian cancer. I thought the big operation would be it, get on with everything, heal up the scar, get back on tour. Not so, my life has completely changed and I have to process what this means now, and it is obviously going to mean chemotherapy and treatment. I don't have any other options... I think the best option is to admit that this exists and to process it."

She added: "I’m absolutely terrified. I’m not brave in the least. I’m frightened, I’m in shock, but I have got really good people around me, that's the best thing I can tell you."

In a later update on Twitter she said that she was finally going home: "After being gloriously looked after by Shirley, @doig_shirley post op, today I am going home to my family and my wee dug to get on with this life!"

Godley first revealed that she was having cancer treatment in November 2021. Fellow comedians and writers were quick to show their support and to send Godley their best wishes.

Richard Herring, who had successful treatment fo testicular cancer earlier in 2021, posted: "Hey Janey. I smacked cancer’s arse this year and it only got one bite out of me. You are a thousand times stronger than me and I know you will wallop this Trump. Rest up, take care. Come back stronger. Much lov xx"

Emma Kennedy tweeted: "Oh Janey. I’m so sorry to hear this. I hope you’re being well supported and looked after. All love and strength to you."

On Wednesday evening Godley tweeted: "Been for my first chemo meeting and I am genuinely touched by the sheer amount of care, hope and information given to me by the team- thanks Scottish NHS. In preparation for the chemo, I am getting my hair cropped into a very short "Dench” look as there is so much of it, it will make it manageable. I am looking forward to getting it cropped, I don’t know if I will do wigs, caps or bandanas - I am just glad to have the option to survive this cancer, I’ll cope with how I look in my own time I suppose."
