Week Ahead: August 18 - 24

Ross Noble

The clouds are gathering, the summer is winding down and this might possibly be the quietest week of the year for comedy in London outside the Christmas holidays. But it is still possible to have some laughs in the capital. Particularly if you head to the Soho Theatre where Simon Evans and Sean Hughes are continuing their runs until next Saturday. Evans is doing his show Leashed, whiles Hughes is tinkering about with new ideas and lobbing in a few reliable routines. Both are highly recommended.

If you keep an eye out Ross Noble is doing some low-key gigs in the city too. He is great in a big theatre, but probably even better in a small space where he can interact with the audience up close and personal. I’m still annoyed that I wasn’t able the get to his shows on the Cutty Sark in Greenwich last year. He is MCing at the 99 Club on Monday night when Hal Cruttenden is among those appearing and then again on Wednesday when Joe Lycett is the pick of the pack.

If multi-media is more your thing Dave Gorman is doing his Screen Guild club night at the Hackney Picture house on Wednesday too. Gorman is one of the most amiable men in comedy as well as the most inventive – give him a laptop and a decent broadband speed and the sky is the limit. D you know what? It’s not such a quiet week after all…
