There used to be a bit of a joke in media circles that when the guests left a high brow BBC arts review programme they could all share the same taxi because they all lived a few streets from each other in fashionable Islington. This crossed my mind because two of the excellent comedians on the final edition of Mock The Week, Maisie Adam and Angela Barnes, are both based in Brighton.

Maybe it's the sea air that nurtures the comedy talent, though neither are actually from Brighton - Barnes is from Kent and Adam is from Yorkshire. And I suppose because of Covid they couldn't share a cab anyway, Maybe a stretch limo at a push if they sat at opposite ends. But then you can imagine the headlines - BBC Splashes Licence Payers Money on Posh Car For Comics. So I suppose it'll be the Megabus...

Anyway, this looks like being a great edition. Adam is making a real impact on panel shows at the moment and Barnes is a terrific joke teller. Also making guest appearances tonight are Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee Glenn Moore, who is never short of a witty quip, and fellow Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee Ahir Shah, whose stand-up shows are more considered and thoughtful but who is no slouch when it comes to the pithy one liner.

I've got a particular soft spot for Ahir Shah. I interviewed him around this time last year on the South Bank where he was due to film his acclaimed show Dots to be broadcast on HBO Max. The interview ran in the Evening Standard – you can read it here – but, well, the gigs were supposed to take place at the end of March, and we all know what was going on at the end of March in 2020...

Plus, of course, regulars Hugh Dennis, Ed Gamble and Dara O Briain hosting. Not a bad way to bow out for this series.
