Following his decision to quit Twitter on Monday it has been been suggested that Stephen Fry may be about to quit the UK.

According to a story in Metro the Sun newspaper says that Fry's husband Elliott Spencer said: ‘We’re moving to Los Angeles and I’m applying for a green card. We’re excited about having a new base.’

Fry has just been in the news due to the furore over his description of his friend Jenny Beaven as a "bag lady" during the BAFTAs on Sunday.

The 58-year-old comedian/actor/writer had a lot of support, particularly when he explained that costume designer Beaven was a "dear friend" but he has also been attacked for the comment being misguided as few people knew they were friends and for losing his sense of humour in general.

On Monday he left Twitter and posted an explanation on his website: "‘Oh goodness, what fun twitter was in the early days, a secret bathing-pool in a magical glad in an enchanted forest. It was glorious to “turn to swimmers into cleanness leaping.” We frolicked and water-bombed and sometimes, in the moonlight, skinny-dipped, but now the pool is stagnant. It is frothy with scum, clogged with weeds and littered with broken glass, sharp rocks and slimy rubbish. If you don’t watch yourself, with every move you’ll end up being gashed, broken, bruised or contused.’"
