Writer and broadcaster Gyles Brandreth has revealed how he blames himself for the accidental death of Emu Man Rod Hull.
Talking to John Cleese on the Rosebud podcast Brandreth explained what happened.
He had been with entertainer Rod Hull during the day in March 1999 and Hull had been complaining that poor TV reception through the aerial would affect his viewing of the upcoming Champions League game.
Brandreth recalled telling Hull: "Get a ladder out, climb on the roof and fix it, Rod."
Unfortunately the weather was stormy and when Hull went up on the roof he fell off the ladder and died of his injuries, a skull fracture and chest injuries.
Brandreth added: "I wasn't actually there but I'd encouraged him."
They had been together earlier watching the Marx Brothers classic Animal Crackers. "I Killed A Man - It Was Rod Hull, Emu Man," said Brandreth.
