News: Could Blackadder Return? Rowan Atkinson Hints At Possibility

Rowan Atkinson has raised the possibility of the return of Blackadder.

In an interview with the Radio Times he was asked if his character might return and he said it “certainly” wasn’t “impossible”.

“That’s about as optimistic as I can be,” he added, “and I’d rather not speculate on when it could be set. But Blackadder represented the creative energy we all had in the 80s. To try to replicate that 30 years on wouldn’t be easy.”

The Mr Bean star did suggest to the Radio Times that he had something of a soft spot for Blackadder though. He admitted he didn’t “actually like the process of making anything – with the possible exception of Blackadder because the responsibility for making that series funny was on many shoulders”.

This is not the first time the possibility of the iconic schemer making a comeback has popped up. In fact the subject is invariably raised whenever Atkinson, Tony "Baldrick" Robinson or various other cast members are interviewed.

In 2019  it was reported that Richard Curtis had talked about Atkinson's Blackadder being an ageing academic next time round in a contemporary setting. We did add a note of caution when we ran the story, pointing out that this is something that keeps popping up - "the "Blackadder Returns" headline tends to come up on a regular basis...See here from 2018. Here from 2017. Here from 2016..."
