News: Scottish Comedy To Close for Two Week Circuit Break?

The Scottish comedy circuit could face a two week shutdown according to a leaked memo.

The details, circulated on social media after appearing on the Guido Fawkes website, suggest that new measures to curb the spread of Covid-19 could include the closure of entertainment venues in Scotland for a fortnight in October.

It has been reported that First Minister Nicola Sturgeon might announce these new measures at her daily briefing today (Tuesday) after a Cobra meeting with Boris Johnson.

Venues that may be forced to close temporarily could include The Stand venues in Edinburgh (pictured) and Glasgow. The Newcastle branch of the respected chain has already had to cut back on its shows after a 10 O'Clock curfew was brought in in the north east last week.

The leaked memo has not been confirmed but a statement from the First Minister on Monday hinted that stronger measures are about to be introduced: "Given what we know about the nature of transmission, the biggest risk at the moment is household to household. When this virus gets into a household it is very likely to infect everybody or most people in that household, even if it's a younger person that is the first one to be infected if there are older people in the household they are likely to be infected," she said. "That's why we reduced households gathering to six two a few weeks ago and obviously other indoor areas where people are likely to be gathering together. Clearly that brings into scope hospitality, and these are areas we are looking carefully at as well."
