News: US Comic Hits Out At New TV Show

Paul Provenza

Update 19/6/14: Interesting update from Paul Provenza overnight. I received a Tweet from Provenza saying "We've resolved our issues" regarding his annoyance with the new Dave series, As Yet Untitled. Here are his joined-up Tweets explaining further: "Had a brilliant Skype with Alan Davies re #Asyetuntitled & Green Room with Paul Provenza. Happy to say we agreed on so much: First, we agreed that we really all should be caring about those still missing girls instead of about any dopey TV shows. Then we agreed that we respect each others’ work & there’s no reason people shouldn’t watch & enjoy both #Asyetuntitled & Green Room with Paul Provenza regardless of similarities & because of their differences."

"Next we agreed the more opportunities for comics to work & do something unusual on TV the better, for comics & for TV. Then we agreed that he is fucking hilarious on QI and that of the two of us I’m slightly cuter. We agreed it sucks that no one makes money on YouTube, but hey, at least the UK can see Green Room there for now. Then we agreed that on Halloween, we will dress up as Coke and Pepsi. I’ll be Pepsi, because Coke has better distribution. Then we agreed that Green Room with Paul Provenza fans are incredibly loyal, viciously funny & certainly know how to make a point. O thank u, supporters, for helping us find amicable resolution in which mutual respect seems to have grown not lessened. Thanx 2u all 4 such an outpouring! Plz spare Alan Davies further slings & arrows of your truly humbling passion for Green Room with Paul Provenza."

Here is the original story from earlier this week.

Comedian Paul Provenza has hit out at Dave’s new comedy show As Yet Untitled, which starts tonight at 10pm. Provenza argues that the series, fronted by Alan Davies, is strikingly similar to his own series The Green Room, in which comedians sit around and chat off the cuff.

In an interview with website Televised Revolution, Provenza, best known for making the documentary The Aristocrats and working on cult improvised stand-up format Set List, said “People need to know about this. A lot of hard work and production originality is being ripped off, and viewers should know it”. The Green Room with Paul Provenza ran for 14 episodes on the Showtime network in 2010 & 2011 and included appearances from Eddie Izzard, Reginald D Hunter and Garry Shandling.

There are certainly similarities. Both shows have a loose, relaxed format, as if the guests don't realise anyone is watching them. But there are also differences. Provenza’s programme appears to put the emphasis on comedians chatting about their careers and their craft and they occasionally get the chance to perform. In Davies' first show on Monday night, author and investigative journalist Jon Ronson appeared alongside Andrew Maxwell, Kerry Godliman and Noel Fielding and talked about Robbie Williams calling him so that they could spend the night together in a haunted house.

Future As Yet Untitled guests include Liza Tarbuck and Jessica Hynes alongside Richard Herring, Bob Mortimer, Bill Bailey and Ross Noble. In Alan Davies' programme each show ends with the guests retrospectively coming up with a title for the show they have just filmed.
