Edinburgh Fringe Preview: Romesh Ranganathan

Romesh Ranganathan

Update 1pm: Romesh has had to pull out. He is replaced by Jo Lacey and Dan Ward.

When I wrote a story about Romesh Ranganathan winning the Leicester Comedy Festival Comedian of the Year Award in 2013 I spelt his surname wrong. It is no excuse of course, but I had never heard of him back then. There is not much chance of getting his name wrong now. The former teacher (I presume he has quit his day job now) has very quickly made his name as a high-profile storyteller and jokesmith, picking up a Foster’s Best Newcomer award in Edinburgh last summer and becoming a TV and podcast regular. He’s got what they call the skills to pay the bills. Charisma, confidence and a firm, original way of reconfiguring sometimes familiar source material about the irritations of adult life. His new show takes that much-travelled route of having a catchy pun-based title, but you can bet that Rom Wasn’t Built In A Day will be significantly better than the title suggests. And if you go to his preview tonight you can hardly ask for your money back. It’s a free gig at Angel Comedy. Not that you will be dissatisfied anyway.*

Romesh Ranganathan is at the Pleasance Courtyard from July 30 – August 24. Tickets here.
