News: RTS Awards – Wins For London Hughes, Fleabag (Of Course) & Saoirse-Monica Jackson

This second series of Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Fleabag definitely feels as if it has opted for a more conventional comic tone. This is not an attempt to start a backlash, just an observation that there seems to be a greater emphasis on the overtly funny this time round. So far anyway...

In this beyond-sublime third episode, for example, Fleabag is doing the catering at an awards ceremony being hosted by her high-flying buttoned up sister Claire (Sian Clifford). No sooner are they in Claire's astonishingly big office that Claire tells her sibling not to touch UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES the ENORMOUS glass trophy. You don't need to be the scriptwriter of Mrs Brown's Boys to guess what happens next...

In fact the awards ceremony is something of a classic spot of trad farce, with one of the presenters throwing up in the bogs when they should be onstage and another guest – a man - having a confusing female name, which is always good for comedy. When it comes to handing out the trophy though, there's a nice, totally unexpected, callback to the first series that only loyal Fleabag fans will get.

The event does lead to something of a showdown between Fleabag and Claire though, with Claire utterly the key line: "I'm not your friend, I'm your sister." It's a great study in sibling dynamics that I'm sure a lot of people watching will immediately recognise.

All of this plus guest turns from Dame Kristin Scott Thomas oozing pure class from every pore and Fiona Shaw CBE as Fleabag's therapist and a bit more flirtation with the hot priest (Andrew Scott) in which he suddenly spots her asides to the camera. Has Fleabag been rumbled? Cue another aside to camera...

When is Fleabag on TV? Fleabag, on IPlayer Mondays at 10am and Mondays, 10.35pm, BBC One.
