News: Comedians Pay Tribute To Chas Hodges

The comedy world has paid tribute to Chas Hodges of Chas and Dave, who has died aged 74.

It was announced earlier today that: "It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the passing of our very own Chas Hodges. Despite receiving successful treatment for oesophageal cancer recently, Chas suffered organ failure and passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of this morning."

Rob Beckett tweeted: "So sad. Such a legend. Together with Dave he wrote the soundtrack to my childhood. RIP Chas Hodges."

Robin Ince wrote: "This is very sad news. He was a quite astounding musician. Utter joy seeing them support The Libertines a few years ago, and not forgetting Chas n Dave played Knebworth with Led Zeppelin too."

Actor Rufus Jones tweeted: "Such sad news about Chas Hodges. He runs through music like a stick of Brighton rock, a one man Muscle Shoals. And he wasn’t just venerated on the UK scene. Here’s a fittingly unexpected and swampy That’s What I Like covered by none other than Tori Amos."

Angela Barnes added: "Absolutely heartbroken. RIP Chas Hodges. Genuinely some of the live gigs I’ve enjoyed most in my life were Chas and Dave gigs. This song reminds me so much of my Dad, he’s up there waiting for a knees up with you Chas"

Bethany Black tweeted: "I unironically loved Chas n Dave. They once opened for Led Zep at Knebworth and Played session music for on the greatest track of all time “I got The...” which was later sampled by in “My Name Is...” played on Telstar by The Tornadoes "

Bennett Arron posted: "Sad to hear about Chas Hodges. R.I.P - Rabbit In Peace"

Impressionist Terry Mynott wrote: "Thank you a true entertainer. Blessed to grow up with Chas and Dave"

Scottish comic Limmy posted the tweet that he usually posts when someone famous dies so it may not necessarily be true, though it sounds like it could be: "Had the pleasure of meeting Chas from Chas & Dave at a charity do once. He was surprisingly down to earth, and VERY funny.".

In 2014 Hodges appeared with John Shuttleworth on John Shuttleworth's Lounge Music on Radio 4 and sang Shuttleworth's Shopkeepers In The North. (pictured). Listen here.
