Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Daniel Sloss: Page 2 of 2

6. What do your parents think of your job?

They love it. My number one fans, the fucking losers. They’ve been with me through the start, come see any gigs they can and criticise the hell out of me. It’s great.

7. What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?

Very little. But at a stretch, the travelling. I bought a house and I live in it for three months of the year, if that. Hard to complain about travelling, but you did ask.

8. I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?

I think I’m fucking excellent. I love my jokes, if I didn’t I don’t think I’d be able to tell them with any sincerity. I like seeing myself grow and learning and becoming better every year, fills me with confidence that I’m not an imposter in this job anymore.

9. How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?

Plenty. And if I keep it at this level, WOOHOO.

10. How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?

I think luck is very important, we all only get so many opportunities. Some more than others, me especially. But I also think that you have to seize those opportunities and make the most of them. I’ve had several lucky breaks, definitely more than most. But I also worked my ass off when I got them. But aye, I’ve been a very lucky boy.

11. Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into a third category?

I don’t play much golf, but I think I’m in that category. I like to do dark and personal stuff, but I’m not tortured. I’m fortunate enough not to suffer from any mental illnesses (well, not the serious ones).

12. Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?

Conor McGregor. The man oozes confidence and doesn’t apologise for being good at what he is good at. I like that a lot. I learned from it. I like the bravado, the act, the performance of “I’m the greatest ever”. I think it’s very funny and admirable. And his work ethic is second to none.

13. Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (please think long and hard about this question, it's to settle an argument with my girlfriend. The future of our relationship could depend on your response).

Wait? Like drawers as in where you keep underwear, or drawers as in what my gran calls underwear? Because I obviously don’t shit myself, but if I did I’d probably feel the need to clean them. But my sock drawer or underwear drawer are a mess. I’ve never paired a pair of socks in my life. My socks match once, the day I first wear them, after that they’re in the orgy box. Who gives a fuck about socks matching? I’ll tell you who, people who I have no interest in spending time with.
