News: Banned Drag Queen To Do Show To Defy Ban

Vanity von Glow, London’s banned drag queen, will be performing live at London's self-styled "free thinking" comedy club Comedy Unleashed in East London on Tuesday 12th June.

Von Glow has been ‘no platformed’ at various venues, after she performed at the ‘Day for Freedom’, a free speech rally held on 6th May. The rally was also attended by figures  including former leader of the English Defence League, Tommy Robinson.

Vanity von Glow, real name Thom Glow, stated that he performed at the rally in the name of free speech and that free speech is not a politically left or right issue. As a Labour-voting drag queen, he said "I accepted the request [to perform at the Day For Freedom] not because I couldn’t wait to stand in a line-up with people whose politics I supported, but because I felt I would be a hypocrite to only champion free speech when it suits my own ideological ends".

Thom has said that while some prominent far right activists had insulted her with terms such as “degenerate,” the far left had been “just as bad” in some ways. “They’re not just calling me a degenerate, they’re also calling me a fascist for having associated myself with the event. The problem is the far left don’t just go for calling you names, their party trick at the moment is to try and go for your source of income."

Comedy Unleashed has stepped in to break the ban. The club’s founders, comedian and writer Andrew Doyle and satirical writer Andy Shaw believe that free speech is a fundamental principle. They invited Vanity von Glow to perform because they support free expression and real diversity of opinion.

Also appearing on June 12 are Geoff Norcott, Daniel Wye and Huge Davies. Compere is Dominic Frisby. Details here
