Chewing Gum star Michaela Coel is to give the prestigious MacTaggart lecture at this year’s Edinburgh International Television Festival in August.
Coel will be one of only a handful of women who have given the lecture. They include former Doctor Who producer Verity Lambert, 60 Minutes reporter Christine Ockrent, Janet Street-Porter and Elisabeth Murdoch. Other speakers include Rupert Murdoch and Armando Iannucci.
As well as starring in her own comedy Chewing Gum Coel has also recently appeared in Black Mirror and Star Wars: The Last Jedi and is due to appear in Netflix’s forthcoming musical Been So Long.
Deadline reports that Coel said she was overjoyed to be doing it: “It seems in some way a celebration of the rapidly changing world we live in. But with the constant reshaping of our technological and political world, comes a growing need to shine a light and be vigilant rather than complacent about the future of our industry. I feel honoured to contribute to this debate on such a prestigious stage.”
