News: Jack Whitehall Wins At The Brits

Jack Whitehall has received glowing reviews from the public and critics alike for his hosting of the Brit Awards this year.

The 29-year-old posho presented the awards for the first time and largely struck the right note, cracking gags and sending himself up, at one point appearing dwarfed by an oversized puffa jacket.

He introduced Oscar winner Sam Smith with: "If you like Adele songs but find them too upbeat you're in for a treat. Sam Smith will be performing."

He also took a sarcastic swipe at Olly Murs, referring the the singer's tweets when there was thoight to be a shooting in Oxford Circus last year. After Rag N Bone Man's pyrotechnic-enhanced performance, Whitehall said: 'That was a controlled blaze, by the way. Apparently Olly Murs was in the toilet tweeting about it."

Spurs striker Harry Kane was sent up too when he came onstage: "The next presenter is a Tottenham striker, meaning the award he's presenting is the only trophy he's getting his hands on this season."

Alexis Petridis in the Guardian said: "Jack Whitehall was a marked improvement on his predecessor James Corden, having apparently failed to get the memo that Brits hosts are required to be rigidly unfunny throughout."

One joke in the show did not seem quite as original however. The spoof choreographed North Korean section of the crowd was, by coincidence, also done on C4's The Last Leg last week. Though this time they held up masks of Simon Cowell.

On Twitter fans suggested that Whitehall was the "funniest fucker" and should present the awards every year.

Though critic Kevin O'Sullivan did not seem impressed: 'Hapless host Jack Whitehall: "It's total chaos here. I don't know whether that's coming across on TV." Oh it is, Jack. It really is. '

After the show previous host James Corden tweeted: "Wonderful job at The Brits tonight completely brilliant x"
