News: Drag Queen Girlband Denim Lands TV Deal

Superstar drag queen girlband Denim, who infuse pop with LGBT politics, are set the small screen alight. Their uplifting life story is in development as a TV serial comedic drama by one of the UK’s most established and successful independent production companies Red Planet Pictures, the makers behind BBC One hit Death in Paradise.

Denim (w/t) is a comedic serial drama about a drag queen girlband who believe they are global superstars. The catch? They now have to prove this to the world. Denim is an all singing, all dancing, all delusional musical comedy drag super-troupe, made up of Glamrou La Denim, Crystal Rasmussen OBE, Electra Cute, Shirley Du Naughty and Aphrodite Greene (née Jones). Hilarious and tragic in equal measure, the mockumentary series will follow the Denim Queens on their dysfunctional world tour (around regional Britain), as they gear up for what they *think* is the performance of their lives. Viewers will be thrust on a rollercoaster journey with 5 misfits who believe that anything is possible (in a world that tells them it isn't), and where the power of sisterhood and friendship ultimately prevails.

Red Planet Pictures will work closely with Denim’s writer-performers Amrou Al-Kadhi, Tom Rasmussen, Guy Woolf, Hugh Wyld & Charlie Parham, who will write and star in the 30-minute episodic series. Denim are represented by Kitty Laing at United Agents LLP who brokered this deal.

Fresh from their success at the 2017 Edinburgh Festival (directed by Soho Theatre’s Artistic Director Steve Marmion) and performing with Florence & The Machine live onstage at Glastonbury, Denim are currently performing their sell-out 5* show ‘Denim: World Tour’ in the main-space at the Soho Theatre: Pop legends in their own minds, this swaggering five-piece retool Whitney and Beyoncé songs in a smart, uplifting knees-up” Brian Logan, Guardian

Denim said; “For decades, we know the world has been yearning to know more about the Denim Qweens, to get behind our legendary pop mythologies, beneath the veils of our epic global profile. To give back to our die-hard-7-billion-strong-fanbase, we're going to be giving an all-access camera crew the priceless privilege of following us on our world stadium tour (for security purposes, limited to regional UK venues during filming).  No more camouflage. No more secrets. No more hairspray. The Denim Qweens are here. They're queer. And occasionally, they wear sheer.”

Announcing the new development Belinda Campbell, Joint Managing Director, Red Planet Pictures said: “Denim brings together five fantastically original and entertaining voices who have lots to say. Their stage show tackles adversity with a unique infusion of explosive pop, glamour, intelligence, politics and humour, taking audiences on an insightful, joyous and irreverent journey. We are looking forward to continuing this journey through television. It’s very exciting to be working with them.”
