Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Jen Kirkman: Page 2 of 2

6. What do your parents/children (delete as applicable) think of your job?

They love it.  They think I’m famous and I try to explain to them that I’m a working comic – there is a difference. But I think they have to believe I’m famous because that reflects better on them.  Who wants some non-famous loser kid?

7. What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?

Having to talk about it.

8. I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?

I think I’m better than I think I am. I think I’m underrated. I think if I were a man I’d be famous and also every other day I think I’m out of funny ideas and I suck.

9. How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?

I would never answer this. I’d like to have about $25 million however.

10. How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?

It’s all luck. And you have to prepare as though you are guaranteed to have a job because if the luck comes and you aren’t good – bye bye.

11. Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into a third category?

I don’t believe in just two options. I’m a tortured person not artist. Life confuses me. My art is the only thing that makes sense. So, maybe I’m a golfer. I actually golf too so I don’t know why I resisted this.

12. Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?

I don’t have a favourite person.  People ask me questions and I knee-jerk answer and then I go wait why did I say that? I truly don’t have a favourite person.  If I name someone famous – the quote will bite me in the ass when they inevitably get caught up in a scandal. "Jen said that Suzy Jones is her favourite person but Suzy sexually harassed three people and said a racial slur!" I can’t name anyone in my family because I will hear from my other family members who are hurt.

13. Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (please think long and hard about this question, it's to settle an argument with my girlfriend. The future of our relationship could depend on your response).

Yes. I have a nothing out of it’s place type of home. I use sock dividers, I arrange bras by color, underwear by style, each drawer has it’s own type of clothes, tee-shirts, work out clothes, pajamas, everything always clean and folded.  My closets are uncluttered and I even have my cleaning supplies arranged from used most to used least.  (I hope your relationship remains intact!)
