News: Just For Laughs President Resigns

Gilbert Rozon has resigned from his position as President of Just For Laughs.

He posted a statement on his Twitter account: "Official Statement. I announce that I am leaving now my duties as chairman of the group just for laughs, as a commissioner for the 375th Montreal celebrations and as Vice-President of the Montreal Chamber of commerce. I withdraw out of respect for employees and families who work for these organizations and all our partners. I don't want to wear ombrage (sic). Shaken by the allegations, I wish to devote my time to the point. To all those who have been offended in my life, I am truly sorry."

This follows allegations of sexual misconduct. It has been reported that a number of women have complained about Rozon in the light of the recent #metoo movement.

Just For Laughs is one of the most important comedy festivals in the world. It has been running in Montreal since 1983 and comedians who have played there make up a roll-call of the world's top stand-ups. It is one of the main places where US TV executives go to spot new talent. Rozon has been involved in the festival from the start. He is also famous in France where he is well known for being a judge on their version of Britain's Got Talent, La France A Un Incroyable Talent. The show has now been suspended by French TV channel M6.

On 20th October it was reported that Rozon is selling his ownership stake in Just for Laughs. Jean-David Pelletier, responsible for communications for the festival, was quoted as saying said that Rozon is selling his shares, and “everything that he owns” in the company.
