News: Comedian Crowdfunds for Dystopian Project

Comedian/writer Chris Mayo is crowdfunding to raise the money to make a web series entitled M.O.T.H.E.R Knows Best with writer, cartoonist and film-maker Scott Kingsnorth.

The ten five minute episodes are set in an Orwellian, dystopian future. A permanently tired and dejected interviewer in a product testing government facility works under the authoritarian matriarch, “M.O.T.H.E.R.”. Each episode sees him testing a new product on a new subject and measuring the results. Eventually existential angst gets the better of him and he starts questioning the machine in which he is a very small cog. . . but with lots of laughs too.

Mayo has already raised over £1000 but needs more, as he explains: "The £1000 we're asking for is the MINIMUM we need for the series to be made, all our actors and crew will be working for expenses to cover their time very kindly given up to make the show happen. Don't forget, if we don't raise the money, the project doesn't happen at all! If we can get to £2000 we can guarantee everyone involved a daily rate and also cover the costs of extra props and set design. If we can raise £2500 we can pay everyone a better daily rate AND cover the cost of initial marketing via Facebook and Twitter. If we can raise £3000 we'll be able to pay everyone involved well, get all the set, props and costume we need to make the show to a very high quality and market it through Facebook and Twitter so everyone we want to reach can find out about it."

"Once the show is funded, we'll start early promo and preparations for the shoot in January 2018. We plan to edit in around 2-3 weeks and have the show up online in February 2018 via YouTube and the shows Facebook page (coming soon). People who pick the early access rewards will be able to watch all episodes via a password protected link before anyone else. We're already planning a second season of the show, which we hope to start work on later next year. Once the show has had a chance to build some interest online, we'll be pitching it in a longer form to TV production companies, either for online or for TV broadcast. We would love the show to have a life beyond the 5 minute online episodes."

The cast includes Holly Mallett (CBeebies Live Arena Tour, Notflix at Edinburgh Fringe), Carla Harrison-Hodge (Fresh Meat), Evelyn Lockley (Labyrinth Festival at The Almeida Theatre, The School For Scheming at The Orange Tree, Hay Fever at Theatre Royal Windsor) Hannah Warman (To Trend On Twitter), Jenny Walters (Jolly Boys Last Stand, Transmission Interrupted), Emma Tansley (Women Redressed at The Arcola), Megan Smith (Mixed Doubles, Sketchorama for BBC Radio 4).
