News: New Improv Supergroup From Marcus Brigstocke & Co

Comedian and broadcaster Marcus Brigstocke leads an all-star cast of improv comedy superstars in a brand new show There Will Be Cakeperformed in South London’s Omnibus Theatre in Clapham for five nights this September.

The line-up also includes Olivier Award-winning comedian Pippa Evans (Showstopper), Rachel Parris of Austentatious fame, and improv master Paul Foxcroft of Cariad & Paul and Monkey Toast. All four performers live in South London and are forming what Brigstocke describes as “The Travelling Wilburys of Improv”.

The starting point for the show, which has been in development over the last couple of months, is Birthdays, the best and the worst moments inspired by parties, balloons, surprises, bitter disappointments, gifts and cake. Each night’s show will be unique. It exists in a single moment and only for that audience, using their ideas to build stories, characters and laughter. And there will be cake.

Commenting on the show, Brigstocke said: “The joy of improv is that after the initial opener you can’t see where it will go until you get there. The pleasure for us is in the exploration. Working with experienced improvisers is ridiculously fun, we are all at the top of our game when we work together. In a team your ego disappears and curiosity takes hold. We can explore a scene for ages or jump out and move on in seconds. It’s a thrill and it makes me laugh like a fool.”

For Brigstocke, the new show follows on from his latest TV show Joy of Techs, his usual Radio 4 schedule and an appearance in ‘Oklahoma’ for the BBC Proms. Meanwhile, Evans has been in Toronto and Edinburgh touring with Showstoppers! The Improvised Musical, Rachel Parris is fresh from touring with Austentatious, an improvised comedy in the style of Jane Austen and Paul Foxcroft has just premiered ‘Questing Time’ at the Edinburgh festival.
