Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Nazeem Hussain

Sharp, funny Nazeem Hussain made his name in Australia with outspoken, provocative shows exploring multiculturalism and race issues. He was half of the duo Fear of a Brown Planet with Aamer Rahman and had the hit solo show, Legally Brown. More recently however, he has become better known down under for his appearance on the Australian version of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! He came fourth and the show introduced him to a whole new audience. Maybe he should compare notes with Joel Dommett…

Nazeem Hussain – Hussain In The Membrane is at Assembly George Square Studios from August 2 - 27. Tickets here.

  1. What is the last thing you do before you go onstage (apart from check your flies and/or check your knickers aren't sticking out of your skirt and check for spinach between your teeth)?

I frantically check my set list on my phone as the walk-out music starts playing, because I genuinely freak out that I’ve suddenly forgotten any and all of my jokes. That happens at least every two or three shows. Then I whack on a smile, walk out, and pretend I’m not falling apart on the inside.

2. What irritates you?

People who jokingly say “I’m coming to your show, you better be ready for my heckles!”

They never end up heckling, and I’m left high and dry.

3. What is the most dangerous thing you have ever done?

I swam with snakes, crocodiles and rats in an underwater cave on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here. Arguably – doing that show was a very dangerous career move.

4. What is the most stupid thing you have ever done?

As above, I swam with snakes, crocodiles and rats in an underwater cave.

5. What has surprised you the most during your career in comedy?

That I have one. I didn’t think I’d be doing comedy for very long when I started. I’m very grateful for the audiences that support me, and for me for coming up with jokes.
