Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Pete Firman: Page 2 of 2

6. What do your parents/children (delete as applicable) think of your job?

I think my parents are pleased and happy I’m doing something I enjoy. I think that's the best you could wish for your kid, right?

7. What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?

Telling people what you do for a living at a social event and having someone ask you to tell them a joke, or in my case, show them a trick.

8. I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?

Is there a way to answer this question that doesn't make me look like an egomaniac, or sound insincere?

I think I spend far too much time thinking about conjuring tricks for a man of my age.

9. How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?

A good magician never reveals his tricks…or his tax return.

10. How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?

Magicians are notoriously sceptical and I’m not sure I believe in luck. I’ve just had some great opportunities and I’ve tried to make the best of them.

Whats that quote? “The harder I work, the luckier I get” It sounds twee, but you can’t really argue with it.

11. Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into a third category?

I’d like to think I’m a golfer. Only because I like the idea of wearing plus fours and chatting with Brucie and Tarby on the green.

12. Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?

The person that decided to put M&S and Waitrose into Motorway Service Stations. If it wasn't for that person I’d have died of a Ginsters overdose years ago.

13. Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (please think long and hard about this question, it's to settle an argument with my girlfriend. The future of our relationship could depend on your response).

My problem is I don’t use drawers, its spread out all over the place. I’m very good at getting things out of my drawers, but terrible at putting them back.
