Ex-footballer Paul Gascoigne has pleaded guilty to racially aggravated abuse after a "joke" he told in a show.

Gascoigne, 49, made the comment during his appearance in An Evening With Gazza in Wolverhampton on November 30 last year.

The former England star admitted using "threatening or abusive words or behaviour" at Dudley Magistrates' Court, changing his plea to guilty before the first witness was called.

District Judge Graham Wilkinson told the court the ex-player had admitted to "the sort of insidious racism" that needed to be challenged.

Gascoigne has been fined £1000 and instructed to pay £1000 compensation to the security guard he made the remark to. The remark is referred to in this review of the event.
