The Queen is a fan of legendary comedian George Formby.
Queen Elizabeth II even considered an offer to become president of The George Formby Society, according to a story in the Telegraph about a forthcoming radio programme. She is reported to have said “I know all his songs and I can sing them.” The anecdote is told by Gyles Brandreth.
She is particularly keen on Leaning On A Lamppost. The song is one of her choices to be broadcast on a Radio 2 programme on Sunday to mark her 90th birthday.
This is one of the cleaner Formby songs. A number of his hits – Little Stick Of Blackpool Rock and When I'm Cleaning Windows – were famed for their innuendo.
The programme airs on Radio 2 on Sunday.
