News: Graham and Helen Linehan Hit Out At Irish Abortion Law

Comedy writer Graham Linehan and his wife Helen Linehan have condemned the law that makes abortion illegal in Ireland. They were speaking in a video as part of an Amnesty International Campaign calling for the decriminalisation of abortion in Ireland.

Helen Linehan movingly talked about how when she had become pregnant in 2004 soon after their marriage, tests revealed that their unborn child's skull would not properly close over the brain. While the child would probably survive the pregnancy, there was a 100% mortality rate after birth.

The Linehans were living in England at the time and were able to have an abortion. "It was terribly sad and devastating," said Helen Linehan. If they had been in Ireland Helen Linehan could have been sentenced to 14 years in prison for procuring an illegal abortion. "I have always been very proud to be Irish but I am embarrassed by Ireland’s abortion laws. This is just something you can’t be proud of. It’s barbaric," said Graham Linehan.
