Edinburgh Preview: Mitch Benn

mitch Benn

Everyone must surely know Mitch Benn by now. It feels as if he has doing topical songs on The Now Show since we last had a genuinely left wing government. The Liverpool-born Beatles obsessive, sorry, enthusiast, is also a regular visitor to the Edinburgh Fringe and returns this year with That Was The Future, his look at “where we are going, where we thought we were going, and what happens when we get there”. So you can probably expect some politics, some music and possibly some talk about three-course Sunday lunches in pill form. Benn is versatile though. As well as being a formidable musician – check out his convincing Morrissey send-ups – he is also a writer. His debut sci-fi novel Terra was published in 2013 and he followed it up with Terra's World a year later. He also penned the pro-Beeb anthem "I'm Proud of the BBC" - a timeless classic that is probably due for a re-release. The embattled broadcaster could do with the support at the moment.

Mitch Benn plays The Cutty Sark Studio Theatre tonight with Andrew Lawrence, tickets here, and is at The Stand from Aug 5 - 30, tickets here.
