After a lifetime of anxiety, complex PTSD, and low self-esteem, Melbourne International Comedy Festival Best Newcomer Frankie McNair is finally done making themselves small. So now whenever self-doubt creeps in, they ask themselves one simple question: ‘What would someone with a huge ass do in this situation?’
McNair's show Huge Ass Mindset is a chaotic love letter to comedy, delusional optimism, resilience & becoming the ass you want to see in the world!

What is the last thing you do before you go onstage (apart from check your flies and/or check your knickers aren't sticking out of your skirt and check for spinach between your teeth)
I usually jump up and down like three times to get the good energy up and the yuck energy out. I feel like a horse in a pen before a race….but if a horse could jump?
What irritates you?
Oh man I was in a show and someone was just clearing their mucus throat every two mins trying to be quiet about it but I just wanted to grab them by the shoulders and say “Do one big cough! DO ONE MIGHTY COUGH AND BE FREE!” If you’re gonna make a mouth noise make it with conviction! Be proud!
What is the most dangerous thing you have ever done?
Just been in my 20s. Jesus. How did I survive that?!
What is the most stupid thing you have ever done?
Again…..please see my 20s :)
What has surprised you the most during your career in comedy?
Genuinely how important, impactful and deep the community and friendships are. I just thought I was gonna do some gags not find a freakin home!!!
What do your parents think of your job?
I think all parents would be stressed about the lack of stability but mum handles it like a champ. Honestly Mum was just thrilled I don’t get my knockers out in my show this year.
What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?
Unsolicited advice :)
I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?
Oh thank you! I also think I’m very good at what I do and I like me too (took a while to get here but it’s nice to arrive).
How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?
It varies so much every year. I remember one year doing my tax return and mum saw how much I earnt and just exclaimed “oh my god how are you alive?!” And I couldn’t answer! But now I can fill my car up with petrol and get brunch without flinching so I’m thrilled! It ebbs and flows! I’d love to earn enough to get a flat where I can paint the walls!
How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?
Super important! And saying yes and being open to the opportunities that comes with that luck is just as important. Be proactive! My manager came to my first show on a whim and then we grabbed a coffee and we’ve worked together ever since.
Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into third category?
Probably golfer but more mini golf that has those slightly cursed kitsch obstacles haha I think everyone probably dances with the tortured artist for a time but you work out pretty quick it’s not very helpful and kinda annoying to be around.
Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?
Okay this is making me realise I don’t know anyone who’s not family, friends or comedians…..Maria my year 11/12 drama teacher. She rules.
Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (please think long and hard about this question, it's to settle an argument with my girlfriend. The future of our relationship could depend on your response).
Medium tidy. Like everything goes in tidy and then eventually gets ruffled around and I’ll refold….hope that’s not a metaphor for you
