Video: Sneak Preview Of This Week's Mock The Week Summer Special

In episode two of Mock The Week: Summer Specials, host Dara Ó Briain and series regular Rhys James are joined by Michelle Wolf, Hugh Dennis, Sara Pascoe, Glenn Moore and Scott Bennett for a satirical romp through some of the week’s biggest headlines, including the World Cup as it kicks off in Mexico City.

Rhys James on the World Cup: “Thing is, everyone bangs on about 1966 like it was this big achievement, but there were 16 teams in the World Cup then and one of them was North Korea.  And we didn’t even beat Germany in the final, we beat West Germany.  That is how much better Germany are at football than we are.  Imagine if we had got to a final of the World Cup with just Swindon, Yeovil and Bodmin.”

Hugh Dennis shares that he watched the 1966 World Cup final: “My Dad went out and bought a telly so we could watch the World Cup final… and the next thing we watched on it was the moon landing.”  Dara Ó Briain jokes, “OK that’s it, this TV is going off for three years.”  Scott Bennett adds, “Here comes John F. Kennedy, don’t switch the telly on.”

Ahead of the World Cup, US police have been training for the influx of football crowds by watching Scottish fans.  Hugh Dennis says, “the last thing Scottish football fans did, they invaded the pitch.  Do you think Trump was watching that thinking ‘Oh God, that’s how you do it!’”  Michelle Wolf explains in American sports there is no segregation of fans in stadiums, to which Glenn Moore adds, “In America it used to be different”.  Michelle Wolf comparing security in the UK to the US: “I feel like American security is just like…why are you telling people, just pull out your guns… ‘it’s half time we’ve shot no-one’”

Discussing Lidl’s beer-proof football shirts, Scott Bennett quips “I do love the idea that nothing says patriotism more than an England football shirt sold by a German supermarket.”

Also in the second episode, robot dogs, Trump’s UFC arena on The White House lawn, Keir Starmer’s social media ban for kids, and Robert Kenyon’s White Van Wave rap.

Mock The Week: Summer Specials airs Sundays at 9pm on free-to-air TV channel, TLC, and in next week’s episode, Dara Ó Briain and Rhys James are joined by Maisie Adam, Chris Ramsey, Sarah Keyworth, Ed Byrne and Glenn Moore.  Series 2 of Mock The Week returns to TLC in September.
