Stephen Merchant Dusts Off His 1994 Glastonbury Appearance With Pulp

Young festival fans at Glastonbury this year might have been enjoying Pulp for the first time when they made a surprise appearance under the name of Patchwork, but one comedy legend has seen it all before.

Stephen Merchant marked the Sheffield band's appearance by posting a clip of himself in the crowd singing along with Jarvis Cocker when they appeared there in 1994. At the time Merchant was only 19 and was studying for a BA in Film & Literature at the Univeristy of Warwick. He had not met Ricky Gervais. They met in 1997 when Gervais hired him as his assistant at Radio X and they went on to co-write The Office.

Merchant posted the clip on social media: "In honour of #Pulp’s triumphant return to the #Glastonbury Festival tonight, here they are in 1994 with a young Stephen Merchant providing backing vocals from the crowd."

Fans were quick to joke about Merchant's footage, in which he is wearing a Britpop-style bucket hat and spectacles and was clearly prominent on the footage due to his height.

At six foot seven inches Merchant easily stood out and many fans referenced his own stand-up joke about the fact that once at a crowded event some people arranged to meet at him.

@JoshuUghh quickly posted: "We've arranged to meet back at you."

Jamie also posted: "did your friends arrange to meet back at you?"

@Jonthemon6 quipped: People stood behind you saw nothing"

Emma Allen agreed: "I stood next to you when Pulp played Hyde Park. Could have been worse, it could have been behind you!"

John G wrote: "Legend. You could literally never have a restricted view at a standing only venue"
