Fury Over Podcast Criticism Of Lucia Keskin Comedy

Social media and TV criticism has come a step closer to eating itself with the controversy over a Celebrity Gogglebox-style podcast in which a star of one sitcom has described another sitcom as boring.

Joanna Page of Gavin & Stacey fame co-presents the podcast Off The Telly with Natalie Cassidy and was discussing the BBC Three hit, Things You Should Have Done, the offbeat sitcom from the comedy mind of Lucia Keskin (pictured, from the sitcom).

Page said of the sitcom: "‘I think she’s obviously talented. I thought the show was s**t. I don’t often think that, right? I want to say “Well done on you right because you got your own show.” I haven’t got my own show. I’ve not written anything so you know, flipping heck, that’s amazing. I thought it was unbearable. It’s not often I can’t watch something. I was so bored. I was so bored...My mother could have written it. My mother could have done it. I just thought “My God, this is just unbearable. I’m so bored. I just genuinely am bored. I’m bored”.’

A number of posts on social media have criticised the comments saying that a BBC star should not publicly criticise the work of another BBC production in a podcast. Off The Telly is a BBC Sounds podcast. Others have particularly pointed out that a woman should not be criticising another woman's work. Some have asked if Page was being outspoken because she was playing a character rather than being herself.

Keskin has responded with a video clip of her in which she can be heard listening to Page's comments. After Page has said "bored" a number of times while Keskin eats a banana and listens the camera pans back to reveal a Gavin and Stacey cast picture on Keskin's wall. Without saying anthing Keskin sticks a piece of paper over Page's head with the word "Bald" on it. The clip has, of course, gone viral. Watch it here.
