Review: BBC iPlayer Funny Valentines – Katy Wix: Dear Jean-Pierre

Jean-pierre

Katy Wix’s romantic short film is a tear-stained Dear John letter, or rather a Dear Jean-Pierre letter, as her ex-lover she is breaking the news to is a French man who doesn’t speak any English. In fact in the film he doesn’t speak at all. The story is told through flashbacks recreating Wix’s memories as she recalls them and writes them down.

At the start she picks up one of those fat children’s biros where you can select the colour you want and that sets the tone for this pretty puerile plot. The gags are consistently silly, leading the viewer one way with the set-up then pulling the rug and going in the dafter direction. There are some good lines as she tenderly remembers how Jean-Pierre had a “soft mouth like a nice bit of carpet" and there is one visual gag that will have you laughing at the thought of it for the rest of the day. That alone enables you to excuse the fact that Jean-Pierre resembles a beardy Hoxton hipster.
