Tributes have been paid to cartoonist Tony Husband who died following a heart attack while he was walking across Westminster Bridge. He was on his way to a Private Eye party on a barge on the Thames. Husband's cartoons regularly appeared in the satirical publication. He was 73.
His son Paul broke the news on social media and included his father's final cartoon in the post. He added that it was ironic that he drew his last cartoon, which he sent to his friend Nick Newman, because he thought he would be late for the party. The cartoon featured him waving farewell to a departing boat.
One of his most famous creations was the long-running Yobs comic strip which ran for nearly four decades.
His cartoons also appeared in publications ranging from Punch, Playboy, the Sunday Express, The Spectator, The Oldie and The Sun.
Charlie Brooker was among those who paid tribute on X: "Been overseas and have only just heard the superb cartoonist @tonyhusband1 sadly died a few days ago. In 1986 I sent some cartoons to the letters page of Oink!; he replied suggesting I contribute for real. Blew my mind. I was 15. My 1st job. I’ll always be grateful. RIP."
Channel 5 News Weather person Clare Nasir wrote: "It’s been an awful week - and now we lose our dear friend and incredibly talented cartoonist Tony Husband. He was a man with a biggest heart and on a mission to bring real human problems to light through his storytelling. My heart goes out to his family right now."
As well as being a highly regarded cartoonist Husband was a campaigner for dementia awareness.
His son Paul responded to countless posts about his father on social media. "I'm really sorry if I can't comment or even even add a reaction to your posts. There's so many. And i kinda expected that. Please know that they mean the world to me, my mum, his grandchildren, my wife and all his brothers"
