Comedians Cover Terry Hall And The Specials Classic Gangsters

A clip has emerged of a group of comedians covering the pop ska classic Gangsters, which originally featured the late, great Terry Hall on vocals in the 2 Tone version. Hall died earlier this week.

In this version it is performed by the occasional punk band Beergut 100, which features comedians Martin Trenaman (drums), Phil Whelans (bass), Bill Bailey (guitar) and Kevin Eldon on vocals. For this set, the finale of a late night BBC Two programme from the Edinburgh Fringe in around 1998/1999/2000, they were joined on vocals by the programme's presenter Mark Lamarr.

Lamarr posted the clip and tweeted: "I've been embarrassed by the gall of this for many years but never actually seen it .It's not bad" and later added: "Thanks for all the nice comments, I only really put this up because it's from 98 (I think) and the Specials weren't really on anyones radar then."

He also explained why the versatile Bailey might have been playing the flying v axe: "Worth pointing out the guitarist left the band the day of the show, presumably Bill would have been playing keyboards originally."

Music fan Lamarr also posted some personal memories of Hall: "Terry was a funny funny man. We once went to watch Neville Staples together and it was a great gig. During the encore he did a Specials song and Terry for some reason stood behind a pillar facing away from the gig. I asked what was up and he said that it all came flooding back. He said when they were young he was very serious and he’d spend the whole gig facing the floor singing about politics with a tortuous passion. ‘ Then I’d turn round and he was on top of the speaker stack with his cock out’."

"Another little memory. I saw The Specials at a gig and they did one of the songs Amy Winehouse had covered. Terry said "This one's dedicated to Amy Winehouse". The next track he said "This one's dedicated to Amy Turtle".
