Sunday Brunch Guests This Week

Sunday Brunch Guests This Week

This week's guests are Clara Amfo, Mark Owen, Sarah 'Miranda' Hadland, the legend that is Happy Mondays maraca shaker Bez and actor/comedian Tom Rosenthal.

Rosenthal has a particularly busy time coming up. He is one of the stars of the forthcoming feature-length Plebs finale and also plays the lead role of a  fly in the new Aardman CITV series, Lloyd of the Flies. The series follows the adventures of Lloyd B Fly, a housefly who lives with his family – including 224 maggot siblings – inside a compost bin they call home. As the middle child of 451, Lloyd is a young fly with plenty to prove. Rosenthal thinks he was cast because he has the jittery physicality of a fly and having interviewed him a few years ago I can see what he means.

Sitcom fans will know Rosenthal for two major roles roles. As Roman Empire nerd Marcus in ITV2's Plebs and as Jonny, the perpetually adolescent prankster son in C4’s Friday Night Dinner. He also did an acclaimed live show, Manhood, about being circumcised.

He is not actually anti-circumcision. “If you want to choose to do it when you're old enough, go right ahead. It's like any other kind of body modification, like a tattoo or a piercing. To do it to a child against their will when they cannot take the decision to take that back, it feels as if it’s against our human rights. I want prospective parents to watch my show. Have a nice night out. Laugh with the boy from the sitcoms with the big nose, but also go away thinking ‘maybe that’s not cool actually’.”

Not that he doesn’t suffer for his art. In Friday Night Dinner he wore shin pads to protect himself from being kicked. "I think Tamsin (Greig, who plays his mother) was wearing high heels and kicked me in the wrong place. So actually, for my shins, acting is much harder than stand-up.”

He might also be chatting about the World Cup, as his father is renowned commentator Jim Rosenthal.

Sunday Brunch, Sunday, November 27, 9.30am, C4
