Victoria Coren Mitchell Causes Stir With Jimmy Carr Comment

Victoria Coren Mitchell has caused a social media stir with her tweet about Jimmy Carr.

There have been calls for streaming giant Netflix to withdraw Carr's latest stand-up special His Dark Material following complaints about a Holocaust joke.

After making some remarks about The Masked Singer Coren Mitchell tweeted: "While I’m here, might take a moment to mention I also love @JimmyCarr, a close friend who’s made about a thousand jokes I wouldn’t make myself, as a stage performer, but as a man is full of goodness and kindness. He’s a properly decent person.

Anyway, ROBOBUNNY."

Others were quick to respond. Singer/writer Tracey Thorn replied: "I have never heard a *joke* that has more made me despise the teller."

Dr Katherine Schofield tweeted: "You know, there are times when you stand up for your friends in public, and there are times when you go, wow, that was absolutely not OK in any universe, and if you love your friend, you tell them so; privately if you like. Guess which kind of time this is."

Mikey Franklin tweeted: "do you think you would be similarly quick to defend him if he’d made a joke defending the murder of Jews in the Holocaust?" to which Coren Mitchell replied: "Yes. It’s not about the joke."

Larocatain defended Victoria Coren Mitchell and tweeted: "I love that Victoria is showing some love for her friend. There are plenty doing the opposite. Victoria thinks him a "properly decent person" and I'm inclined to accept that and that he made a mistake."

David Baddiel has also commented on the controversy on social media. He did not appear to attempt to defend Carr's joke but added: "As a footnote, I'd add that Jimmy is a close friend of mine and a brilliant stand-up in general. Makes no difference to how I feel or think about this specific joke."

Update: The following day Victoria Coren Mitchell tweeted this: "In traditional fashion I’m not going to look at Twitter for a few days, so I’m sorry if I miss things. You can only try and do what you think is right in any situation. Forster said (as well as “Only Connect”): “If I had to choose between betraying my country and betraying my friend, I hope I should have the guts to betray my country.” I wasn’t defending the joke. Have a lovely Sunday, and see you at some point for lighter exchanges."
