News: Gold Launches Cracker Joke Competition

UKTV channel Gold has launched their national competition to find the best modern Christmas cracker jokes for the second year running.

Last year’s competition garnered hundreds of entries, with “What does Miley Cyrus have at Christmas? Twerky.” crowned the winner.  Gold are searching for the best modern festive jokes that put a comedy twist on the current news agenda or pop culture phenomenons to keep the laughter fresh this Christmas.

The competition was inspired by a Gold poll of 1,756 Brits which revealed that nearly seven in ten (70%) of us groan rather than giggle at Christmas cracker jokes and (72%) said they felt that the jokes were sorely in need of a 21st Century makeover.

The competition is open until October 28. The winner will receive holiday vouchers worth £1500 and a chance to feel like a member of the royal family by having their very own personalised Christmas crackers made.

Gold says that its mission is to ensure that this Christmas is full of laughter and is inviting wordsmiths, wits and gag writers to submit their new, original and funny seasonal jokes via Twitter, and as such all entries much be within 140 characters – short and snappy as a cracker joke should be.

HOW TO ENTER

Open to all aged above 18, the jokes must be suitable for a family audience and must be original content. To enter please:

  • Tweet a Christmas-themed joke via your personal Twitter account  including the hashtag  #GoldCrackers
  • The joke must not be more than 140 characters including the hashtag
  • Multiple entries are allowed
  • Must be original content
  • Follow @GoldTVChannel (so we can notify the winners)

For further information on the terms and conditions please visit the Gold website. The competition will close on Tuesday October 28, 2014 at 6pm.

The best jokes will be shortlisted by a comedy panel led by Bruce Dessau and then put to a public vote – with the top ten best new jokes being announced in December.

Steve North, General Manager of Gold, says, “Puns about celebrities or the news agenda are a great way to update a typical cracker joke. Last year’s joke entries set the bar high, we’re looking forward to seeing what people can come up with this year.”

The entrants who supply the top ten jokes will get their own set of bespoke Gold crackers featuring a selection of the winning jokes. The winner of the joke judged to be the funniest will receive holiday vouchers worth £1500. The nine runners-up will receive a Christmas hamper.
